The shutter is best, so of course its more expensive, Don't go with the tippman tho man cus those are just stock crap. Go with the compact if you are looking for cheap, but made nicely
So here it be
1. Shutter
2.Compact
3.Tippman

Well what kind of paintball are you going to do?
I have a spyder compact 2k because it can be used in woodsball and is excellent of speedball and it's cheap. If oyu have the money I would go for the shutter because it's got alot of good upgrades on it that you'll want later
If you play wood's ball I strongly suggest using the tippmann 98, not saying that you can't us it in speedball, but I am saying that the tippmann 98 is way too long for me to run with and since woodsball is a bit slower then speedball you wouldn't have to worry about hauling a big long gun around

For the new player the shutter is great. It is tough, upgradeable and easy to maintain. I have one and I love it. I have since upgraded to a cocker which I love even more. If you go with the shutter you won't regret it.
By the way, mine is for sale if you're interested.:D

I have a 98C and I agree that it works better in woods than in speedball but you can manage it in speedball if you aren't lazy and a weakling.
I have seen people have good results with the Spyder Shutter but have never used one.
PERSONALLY, I would go with the 98C but then again I own one so I might be a bit biased. It performs well in all conditions requires low maintenance. But again, your preference.

Ask yourself-
Can you run over your Spyder with a car? Nope...
Can your Spyder shoot in heavy rain? Nope...
Can your Spyder get caked in mud? Nope...
Is your Spyder any light they a stock 98? Nope...
Is your Spyder any shorter than a 98? Nope...
Is your Spyder lower-profile? Nope...
Does your Spyder out-shoot a 98? Nope...
Does your Spyder come with a decent stock barrel? Nope...
Does your Spyder play well in winter? Nope...
Hmm...

if he wants to get a spyder he'll get a spyder, if he wants a Model 98 he'll get a model 98, there a advantages to a spyder and there are disadvantages to a model 98
