A regulator regulates the pressure that goes in the marker, allowing for a more consistant airflow input. This make the marker more consistant, which translates into accuracy (shots on shots).

A good one has high flow rates, and usually has a pretty good operating pressure range. Some actualy have parts you can change out to run high or low pressure. Cheeper regs (Most stock regs on blowbacks) might opperating at a wide range, but don't opperate well after a while, and don't have a great flow rate, so they tend to shoot down after a while, as they restrict air too much. This is only an issue at some opperating pressures, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Upgrading to a nicer one will increase your air flow, allowing you to lower the pressure more if you wish, give better regulation, so are more consistant and can make larger adjustments (Start to end PSI), and are pretty consistant with air flow over the opperating range of the reg.
