Any of you guys used or seen a paintball cannon in use?

Paint cannon, no, but there was the time some guys at our field brought a Paintball 155 mm Howitzer Mobile Artillery Unit which was very effective until the opposing team air-dropped a squad of Paint Dragon ATMs ... That really turned the tide for them!!

Yeah, I know, I'm being a Smart Arse again!! :p

Antiramie: Yeah.. i've used paint grenades in friendly games(because they aren't legal in tournies).

The only paint grenade that is legal is the Tippmann squad buster. Man do those things suck.

When you think of the word "grenade", what do you picture? I think of a device that blows up and can take out multiple targets, in other words, a glorious little device.

But the Tippmann squadbuster should by no means be called a grenade. IT should be called the "paint weenie", or the "spraying schnitzel". Its only tubing, yeah, thats right; tubing with paint in it that spins...WHOOHOO. Not a grenade in my books.

They need a new concept.. i'm dabbling with one design now.. and if it works, I'll sell 'em!

My sons have one. It's pretty cool. It uses compressed air or CO2. It runs at 100-120 psi and shoots 280 fps.

It uses cups as sabots to hold the balls. It's refillable on the field. We use it for up close action where we need to take out a large group with one shot. We generally put 15-20 balls in at a time. The top tube is the barrel and the bottom is the air chamber. We fill the air chamber with air/CO2, disconnect the tank and then open the valve when we want to fire it. It's not real loud buighly effective!!

At the Michigan Monster game we were sending Squadbusters out of water ballon launchers. When they hit they literally exploded. When we came out from the edges with it the yellow bellies took off running. All's far in love and war...

I've seen them but never used them. How does the "Spraying Schnitzel" work?

Well, basically its just tubing with paint in it. The tube is bent in half and then pluged. The plugs have a pin going throught the end holding the plugs to the tubing.

To use you pull the pin and heave it at someone. *if* the grenade hits hard enough, the plugs will pop out and the paint sprays out. Hence the name spraying schnitzel. Its not a grenade.

When I used these things, I whipped 'em really hard and only half actually worked. These were fairly fresh ones according to the proshop i bought them from.

Maybe If you do like actionjunkie and give these things altitude, they would explode. The thing is.. even then, is it not just like a water ballon? It doesn't actually explode?

ActionJunkie: That looks sweet. MY brother made one but we haven't taken it out to a game yet.

My bro used 2 ball valves: one between the tank and resevior and the other between the barrel and resevior.
That way he can leave his 7oz tank on.

Just wanted to know if it was worth it lug it around...But I guess if you even take out one person with it.. it'd be satisfying.

I'm gonna go ahead with design i have to make it more automated. THeres a big 24h game up here in July, so we're all making crazy sh!t to bring.

Ever see a potato cannon fire paintballs? It really makes you wanna go out and shoot somebody. I wouldn't use it in a game, however, because it fires with aerosol hairspray and shoots way too hard (potatos can fly 600 ft).

So if any of you guys wanna see some serious paintball firepower, just load up the good 'ol spudgun.

actually, i've experimented with both explosive and air canons. I have had more range with the air propelled cannons than the explosive ones.

Yeah I know it sounds hard to beleive, but its true. I read a paper the other day on the subject, and its proven that you can get more power out of pnuematic systems than explosive ones( for the purpose of projecting an object).

Not to mention its safer, and explosives of any kind are illegal in paintball.

I thought about building a pnuematic type gun after i had experimented with the explosive one. I would then be able to take it to the local field and try it out.

The only thing that keeps me from making one is the expense and difficulty that comes along with it. Explosive cannons are very simple but the pneumatic are rather complex. ActionJunkie, do you happen to have any plans drawn up for the cannon that is featured in the pic?
