It's the truth, Paintball was proposed to the Olympic community and the results were......

Lost by 1 vote.

This information came straight from "Popular Mechanics" magazine, October 2002 issue. Rich Taylor, the author of this article, interviewed Sonny Lopez of Worr Games. It is expected that in the next meeting of the Olympic board, Paintball will be passed with ease because of the rapid growth of the sport every year. Sonny is quoted as saying, "The future is 7-man, thats probably what they will play in the Olympics." Basically the article gave a very good persona to paintball by describing the team work necessary to play. The article explained what paintball was and how a basic marker works. the article helped explain how the bolt creates an air tight seal for the compressed air, it stated that paintball isn't exactly point, pull, and elimination. It described how the lobbing path plays a very important role and how mastering it can make or break your shot. It showed how a simple gust can completely mis align your shot. It went on to describe the clothing that was worn and the purpose for it. They also showed that paintball isn't a sport that can be cheaply played. They compared it to a motorcycle industry, where the whole concept is personalization. Right about here Sonny made a little discrete commercial for the 'Cocker.

One of the more interesting facts about paintball I learned in this article is where the word "marker"came from in relation to paintball. Cattle herders use to use a crude form of paintball gun to "mark" cattle, and certain colors ment certain things. One day some farmers got a little bored and started shooting each other. Friends joined in, and soon enough it was being played as a fun little joke. From here the para-millitary started getting into it. And soon enough the Army put it in to basic training. From there most of you know the story about how a couple of wise guys took the markers and made a little business out of it, and were bought out by a bigger company.

I thought i would share this with you all just to get all you tourney players out there (like me) to start considering the Olympics as a possibility. It really didn't give much more information then that. But also, most importantly, it gave an EXCELLENT persona and overview to paintball.

my ramblings are done.

man I hope paintball gets into the olympics. That'd be AWSOME, it would stop the US's law crusade against paintball, and it would glorify the sport. How cool would that be. And maybe one day I cant play in the olympics hehehe

I honestly want to know who voted on that, and where they got that "lost by 1 vote" information.

I have a hard time believing it.

Not to mention, even if the Olympics are ready for paintball... is Paintball ready for the Olympics? That's the real question. You get the problems you find in the NPPL in the Olympics, and we're looking at international incidents!

Well, if you think about what happens on soccer, I don't see why cheating would be a problem... :D

Seriously, I think that paintball may very well become an olympic sport, specially because of the "team"characteristics of the game.(but i still believe that they need to figure a way of making the paintballs hurt a little bit less...)

Hopefully an olympic run event will help smooth out a lot of the problems that they have in the NPPL, like reffing... wouldn't that be nice:)

The steroids thing was a joke. See, stength doesn't matter at all in paintball. (ok, a little bit, but if you're too woosy to hold up a paintball gun then there's something wrong with you).

is there even enough of an international base, to have many different teams competing..and would current professional players be allowed to compete?

They'd probably just do what they do in the olympics. Most of those hockey players are from Canada, but they'll play for any team. It'd probably be the same thing with this, some kid from across town will end up playing for team Elbonia or something.

What are you talking about quejerpwacky. Last time I checked you played for the country you were born in don't you. That's why Canada won the olympic mens hockey. All the good hockey players are born in Canada but Canada can't afford to keep them so they go play for Colorado and places like that.

Can somebody give a estimate of how many countries have access to paintball guns. I think that Canada, U.S and maybe a few a very few european countries have them.

The Olympics would be Canada vs U.S and that's it.

Don't know. I could very well be wrong. Sure, it would make more sense the way you described it, but remember, we're talking about an international organization here. Logic doesn't apply.

Yeah, Canada won.... FINALLY! Their victory was more an apology. That's their national sport, and it took them 50 years to get a Gold Medal!

Also, there's a lot of hockey players from the Czech and The Soviet Union!

That's right, Soviet Union, don't believe them. They only try to make you THINK they aren't the S.U. anymore, that they're a republic. But we know better, don't we Smeagol! Yes.... our precious!

well to answer the question about how many countries play paintball....lets put this into perspective.

it lost by one vote, meaning that the representatives of each country voted, now obviously not EVERY country can play, but i garuntee u all of the european nations can, middle east can, parts of africa can (not all of a africa is poor) and all of the asian countries can, im sure austrailia could....so a lot of people play.
