Could be a lot of things, bad gas, carb needs rejetting/rebuilding, rust in the fuel lines, engine needs an oil change, etc.

gonna start low and when i feel like i've grown out of it i'll step up to something "bigger"

Depending on your size I'd get something bigger... theres not a whole lot of power to come out of a 250 ninja, and you'll get bored with it quick.

Truth.

If it were me I would learn on the V-star and figure out what style and size of bike you want from that. Then get a bike that will last you for years. It's kinda like paintball you don't start with a BE Talon, then a Spyder, then and EVO, then a Cocker, then a DM4, then an EGO. Just frigging use a Spyder till you get board then buy an EGO.

Another thing about the 250 ninja... When you're doing 65-80, chances are you're probably in your last gear, and almost full throttle, or at full throttle... now keep in mind, this is fine, but when it comes time to where you need to get out the way... and slowing down, or moving over won't work and you need to speed up... you wont have a whole lot of power band to work with there if any.

Wow there are some pretty sweet bikes in here. The last one I had was a little CR125 way back 10 years ago

I can get about 85 or so per gallon, 75 if I am on dirt and pushing it.

<3 ya bandy

Read some chatter about bike sizes. All I want is something that is capable of 100 or so. Not because I would ever ride that fast [with traffic], but because I don't want to be maxxed out at 75.

HOWEVER, even a 600 has wayyyyyyyyy more power than I would ever need!
My ideal would be a 400-500, but they don't make those anymore.

From what I've been told, cruiser engine sizing is completely different. The guy at the bike shop said that the T100 that I've been lusting after is perfect for starting. Plenty of power, but not so edgy that a misplaced throttle blip will kill me.

EVIL - HOT RIDE!
You'll get bored with something small really quick. I'm glad I went ahead and just got a large or decent sized bike the first time, but if you don't have any riding experience then maybe you do want to start out small....

Hey Evil, reading comprehension. I wasn't talking about the T100, and if I was, I would have said something about it. I'm telling him not to get a small bike for his first one. I've ridden one of those triumphs, nice bikes with plenty of power, although the power band is not radical, but if he has absolutely 0 riding experience I still don't think he should start off real quick on a T100 although it wouldn't be a real steep learning curve.
