In the past couple of months, I've had quite a few people ask me how I painted my tippy camoflage. Well, I've responded enough that I decided to put it in a thread for ya'll to access if you're interested. Here's how I did it:
Here's the steps to take:
1) Completely disassemble your gun. Take out the interanals and put them aside. (At least, that's what I did for my 98.)
2) Be sure to mask off what you don't want to get paint on...the internal part of the body being the most important.)
3) If it has any sort of anodizing on it (like the black anodizing that the Tippy 98 has), lightly sand it. Don't take it all off, because it will act as your primer coat.
4) Lay down the receiver halves in a "mirror" sort of way.
5) Here's the paint I used: Rustoleum Camoflage spray paint. 3 colors: Khaki, Brown, Olive Green. Also, get a can of clear top coat that has a matte finish.
6) Spraypaint both the receiver halves Khaki. (The tannish color.) That will be your base coat. Not too heavy, not too light. Let it dry for at least a half hour. Then put a second coat on.
7) Next, get your brown spraypaint. My philosophy on the brown is this: Brown will be used to create "branches", just like a tree. Therefore, don't spray "blobs" of brown, spray lines of brown. At the MOST, paint 3 lines. You don't want too much brown.
8) Let the brown dry, and then add a second coat of brown over your lines that you previously painted. Let it dry another half hour.
9) Now for the olive green...Green will be the "leaves" on your marker...therefore you can "blob" the green, instead of painting in lines like you did the brown. Green can be more circular. You're going to get some overspray on your brown which will soften up the lines of the brown, but that's ok, because you're coming back to the brown anyway. Also, make sure you don't cover all the khaki, because you still want some khaki showing through in spots...
10) Let that dry, and then do a second coat of green.
11) If you feel that you covered up too much khaki, "blob" another coat of khaki where you want it.
12) Now, go back over your lines of brown with one more coat. YOu want to have hard edges with the brown, again, because it's like branches...
13) Let that all dry for at least an hour. Then take your clear coat, and spray paint all of the body of your marker that you paint with the clear coat. Let it dry a half hour.
14) Add a second coat of clear coat.
15) And a third if you wish. (After letting the second coat dry of course.)
There ya go. You know have a camo painted marker. It's not really that hard to be honest. If you need, use my marker as a guide for a pattern of sorts... Oh, and I painted my hopper too...same exact process.

I just want to keep my 98c Black, but the pain(t) that came with it is horrible, it chips off all the time. Is a do-it-yourself paintjob with clear coat more durable than the stock matte black?

hey avery it is tougher you can get all this paint at canadian tire but sand off all the paint and prime it with aluminum primer in the auto section and buy autopaint and primer it turns rock hard i decied to put a new paintjob on my gun after i painted it i sandblasted it it took 4 hours to get that paint off it realy tough.

Where can you get the Rustoleum spray paint? Heck...I got mine at Meijer. You could probably find it at Wal-Mart, KMart, any store that has a lot of spray paint.
More durable then the stock paintjob? Mmmmm...I dunno about that. I've got little scratches here and there, but it hasn't been too bad overall. Probably not as durable as something like Renegade mentioned.

Oh, I'll be handpainting the Tippmann Custom 98 lettering on the side too...painting that black, and repainting my grips black. I don't like them camoed...

Another tip: Use wide masking tape to make patterns. Paint a base color, let dry, then cover what you want to show with masking tape. This can be used to make camo mimicking woodland, realtree, advantage, and all that. It gives straight edges. Personally, I like the non-tape method better, but the taped way does look cool if you have a design you like.

True...that's a good way. I was just lazy. *laughs* The only thing with patterns like Realtree though...if you're out of an area that looks like that, the "busyness" of the pattern will stick out. That's why I liked the traditional camoflage that I painted. It blends well most anywhere...grass, brush, trees...etc.

And just another tip: Give your Tippman a layer of spraypaint, then use acryllic over it. For the most part, the acryllic will stay put, giving your gun a camo available in a cheap variety of colors. But make sure to premix your colors, or it will come out with different shades and look unproffessional.

Doesn't this make your gun shine in the light? I cammoed mine with cammo tape and went along the seems of the tape with a wood burning gun in order to get rid of them. This way looks cool though.
for some reason, i like the new colour they have for the tippmann 98 custom but i also like yours as well but that seems like it would take a long time to do and i am too lazy to do all that work.

hey crime i was looking at your tippmann thread and i wanted to see some more pics of your ghille suit but that link is not a site anymore can i see some ghille suit pics?
I'll post them in the general paintball forum...it's in the "Post pics of you in your gear" thread. They don't belong here... And just a note, my ghillie suit will continue to undergo changes...so the pics I'm going to put up aren't finished form...
