It won't damage the aluminium in any way, it's just that chrome does not plate well on aluminium, so it would chip and flake off very easily. To get a good, strong chrome finish on aluminium, the aluminium has to first be coated or plated with another metal that the chrome will adhere to better. Commonly the aluminium is coated with zinc, then plated with nickel, which is finally plated with chrome. This can lead to screw threads and holes becoming smaller and a very tight fit.

what's the point in plating a stock trigger frame when you're going to buy an e-blade?

You'd know if it had come off, as it tends to come off in flakes, so you'd have some parts chrome, others not, which is very noticeable.
Yours probably just needs wiping down. If you are going to polish it, don't use anything too abrasive. The chrome layer isn't that thick, and you can polish straight through it!
