does it affect the performance or do anything bad to the barrel

No, not if you get a 2in. Don't get anything longer though.

Depends on the gun. On say a cocker, you need the bore to match the paint or else the ball will just roll down the barrel. Adapters are usually large bore size so you'd have a ball rolling around the breach meaning you're going to get inconsistent shots.

On an a-5 it doesn't matter since it uses one already, but for just about every other gun it does. At the very least it doesn't help performance.
