yes, because firearms are so similar to paintball guns...
I know it's wrong to say, but I think the majority of people will admit to being less "safety conscious" with paintball guns, than real firearms. Obviously one is capable of inflicting more damage, and it's really easy to say take high care with both, but we know that when you become highly familiar with something, you're less careful.
If you know any farmers, machine workers, or carpenters, you know they can take shortcuts that are less safe because they are comfortable with their tools. Not the best idea, but it's common...

Farmers in the US:
"Crap, better get this radioactive waste away from my farm before the feds get here "

On the general subject of safety though, I'd like to point out that a bit of neoprene is not sufficient to protect your neck from a paintball at close range.
For example a hit to the larynx at 15-30 feet will cause death within a couple of hours without emergency medical attention.
I wear and issue to my team members neck protectors that are 3/4"thick segmented impact foam. It's basically a lace-up 'combat neck brace'.
I also suggest protecting the family jewels with a good 'cup' made for baseball or whatever. I got one of my testes clipped by a paintball as I was squatting Indian style and DUDE, it was just a clip but imagine someone 'flicking' your ball with their finger... Similar deal. Ever since then I religiously wear a cup when paintballs are around and I think everyone should.
Taking the necessary safety precautions, using the right protection for the right bits of your body makes it so you don't have to have range restrictions or 'bunkering' bans etc. I think if there's no pain involved in the game you may as well be using laser as it's much more accurate and has range. The trick for me is to protect from injury and leave yourself light on protection against welts and bruises.

It's linked to directly in the official safety thread that I looked at when I joined.
You just bumped this thread to the top with your comment about not bumping it.

Indeed you're right for this thread. This was actually just one of the two copies that were put up. The other one is stuck at the top of the "New Paintballers" forum.

NEVER point ANY gun at anyone, nor at yourself, unless you intend to shoot the person with it. Never have your finger in the triggerguard unless you intend to pull the trigger.
It's that simple, and it applies even to errant waving of the muzzle.
If you have kids you should teach them this from a very young age. Waterpistols and toy guns included. Everything. this is how you avoind firearms accidents (and paintball accidents). This is one of the most important rules in anyones life.

Actually I think the topic in this thread is important enough that it should be upped once in a while. Many people just gloss over the stickies.

Ouch, that looks nasty. As a ref I saw that happen way too many times. You're lucky you didn't completely lose your eye.
