Doesn't someone here go to Ohio State? I need to know how deep the essay has to be. I'm writing it right now and its a ***** because the prompt is just asking me to suck up to them basically. (Prompt: Why are you considering The Ohio State University?)

Id write with a chip on your shoulder. They probably expect most kids to just suck up. Sound confident and determined in your goals. Kinda think of it like a business deal. If you come across as someone who will achieve great things and has his head in the game then they will want to have you as a credit to the school. But be tactful about it.

^that's kind of what I was thinking. Write as if the school is just a tool you're using to get to where you eventually want to be. You'll come off as more driven and independent and less of suck-up.

Just tie everything back to what YOU want to get out of your education experience for YOURSELF, rather than why Ohio State is great and all the great things it can do for you. That doesn't mean you should belittle the school. Just make sure you are the focus of the essay, rather than Ohio State. The application essay you write for pretty much every school should be the same in this respect, the only difference is the question asked, which determines what kind of angle you take to get that message across.

I know that's vague but might help make sure you're going in the right direction.

Although if you have the grades to get in, you shouldn't sweat the essay too much. At bigger schools the essay probably only matters if it's either so bad that they don't think you even know english, or if your grades and SAT are really borderline and there are no other aspects of your application that set you apart.

Eh, I have a 3.09 overall GPA and a 25 ACT. shouldn't be too bad getting in. I'm more worried about my University of California essays since those schools will be much more difficult to get in.

Dude, if you want to apply to a midwest school that really doesn't expect you to suck up, apply to Indiana University. No essays, no bullspit. Lots of people end up with scholarships, but not if you're in-state. You have to be amazing to get in with a bunch of scholarships if you're in-state.
