Ain't going to find anything under a couple hundred dollars then.. Have fun paying for the ammo too. I have a shotgun and 9mm, but I prefer to shoot the shotgun or a .22lr rifle or handgun anyday of the week. It's alot easier to shoot when you aren't paying 50cents or more per shot.

I definitely suggest a Mosin Nagant. I purchased an M39 about a year ago now, and I've already gone through a little over 600 rounds over the course of 13 trips to the range or so. Being an M39 rather than the typical M91/30, it costs a bit more, but I can easily say it's the most fun gun I have, fairly accurate as well,

( I was too lazy to resize)
That's a 30 or 40 shot group at 50 yards, not too shabby for a milsurp with standard rear notch/front post sights and a trigger pull longer than a football field shooting surplus ammo that costs ~80 bucks per 440 rounds.

One thing I will say is that it's worth it to spend a little extra to get something you really want. A rifle can last a lifetime (or several) if taken care of.

You could learn how to roll your own and get one of these.

That's probably a bit too much money, and too time intensive for something he only wants for fun a few times a year, Travis.

Well, someone who doesn't know as much about this stuff might have taken you seriously, just wanted to point it out, bro.

You can take it seriously or you don't have to take it seriously. A pistol is not what he wanted, and he probably doesn't know what any of that stuff is on the table anyways besides the gun and the box of ammo. If he did wanna take me seriously, who am I to tell him he shouldn't reload his own ammo and get into wild catting anyways?

Never said you told him not to, I'm simply saying that someone who seemingly has limited time to devote to it, won't go to the range much, and wants it on the cheap, probably won't want to reload wild cat cartridges. You know how time consuming load development can be

That Aimonline site he talked about had them for like $60. It also offered a hand pick for $10, if anyone would care to explain what that is?

I was thinking about getting one myself but I haven't used my other gun in over five years so i don't know if it would be worth it for me.

put up some pics when you do get one, and let me know how it shoots, it might persuade me to get one too.

Hand picked is where instead of grabbing any rifle, they pick the one out with the best crown, bore, wood to metal fit, and metal finish. For another 10 dollars you can request arsenal. Automatically add 10 dollars to original price for a hex receiver musty nugget.
Bucket of photo is being retarded right now but rest assured I will have you two comparison pics as SOON as photobucket stops being retarded.
EDIT:
Hex receiver: (1928 tula ex-dragoon, this is the tula symbol after the bolshevik revolution and the change in power. The dragoon rifles were cavalry rifles that were shortened M91's, and when the 91/30 came around they were updated to 91/30 specs. Mine may be a proto-type but there is no sure fire way of knowing so otherwise it's just a regular ex-dragoon. I also have 2 more hex receivers, a 1933 tula doubled dated MO marked, re-dated in 1951, and a finnish SA marked M39 with a 1944 barrel date, but the receiver has no tang date meaning the receiver was made somewhere from 1891-1894. Finnish mosins are built on russian receivers. The ex-dragoon has no tang date either.

The stamping means Foremost arms factory at tula. CCCP means USSR.
Round receiver: This is a 1939 izhevsk round receiver. 90% of wartime rifles will be made at izhevsk, especially from 1943 on after the germans captured tula. The war-time machining of izhevsk rifles will be crude and ugly, but the rifles will still be just as good of quality as older rifles were and will shoot great.

You can't see the receiver very well, the stampings are always on the barrel shank, but you can partially see the receiver and it is round.
And just for pron, the double dated MO marked tula rifle pulled out of army proper for ministry of defense guard duty in 1951
EDIT: FOR THOSE WANTING TO PURCHASE A MOSIN, I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO ALL OF YOUR READING FIRST ON 7.62X54R.NET. I CAN ALSO HELP YOU WITH ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE, SEEING AS I AM A COLLECTOR AND MOSINS ARE MY MAIN INTEREST. YOU WILL NEED TO LEARN HOW TO REMOVE COSMOLINE.
If anyone has any questions on how mosins shoot... just ask me. I've fired off quite a bit of 7.62x54r from different types of surplus I.E. russian, bulgarian(the best IMO) and czech. I also reload for the 7.62x54r, and have loaded several different types of bullets, but mostly just shoot cast out of my finnish M39 now, and fire surplus out of the rest. Ask Jordan (Head Hunter), I convinced him and gave him mosinitis.

We use good ole' WD-40 on our machine parts get shipped from over seas. Don't know how well that will work on the guns but I can't see it hurting anything other than the wood.
