you get what you pay for, nuff said there. i know a few people that have had great luck with harbor frieght air tools, and others that have to tear the thing down everytime they use it. the ones that hold up best for me are ingersol rands, but those aren't the cheapest. even without oiling everyday of use they hold up great. and as far as a decent cheap compressor, home depot has a dewalt one with an emglo compressor, thats my recommendation. had one at an old job and it did pretty well, and the emglo compressors on our gas powered compressors work great, never had a hiccup in 20 years in 3 compressors. just remember to get a compressor and fittings that can keep up with the wrench, most important thing.

EDIT:

www.google.com lazy bastage...

Can't beat Craftsman. Break your 30 year old torque wrench over the head of a zombie? No questions asked they will give you a new one.

you'd think that....i've had to call a manager to get a new 3/4 breaker bar, somehow they could tell it had a 5 foot pipe on it and didn't want to replace it

Craftsman tools aren't worth the hassle. They may replace them, but they just break again.

Ingersol Rand seems to be the #1 choice for an impact everywhere I've asked, and I don't mind spending a little extra for something that will work when I need it to. I really have no idea what to start with a compressor in terms of capacity and such.

Jet air tools are junk for anything other than light duty use, the company I used to work for would buy them and we'd burn them up in a few days. We would go through about 10-15 in a month.

Dewalt makes a good battery powered impact, if you can afford them.
CP makes decent air tools that aren't bad for the price.
Snap on makes a good impact, had one for over 15 years and still works like new.

speedy, just get a compressor that exceeds the gallon per minute flow rate of the wrench, that and 1/4 npt has worked well enough for us, but the new compressor came set up with 3/8 and we left and and glad we did, really did help on our really hungry wrenches. theres a reason most recommend ingersol, things are tanks, when i was working in south texas during the summer, never had one burn up at 110 deg heat all day, and i don't know how many times i dropped on off the top of the combine.

to ironman, the bin jackers and leg crew used nothing but that dewalt cordless and every week i saw a torched one in on the replace pile, not saying they're bad for a do it yourselfer as i'm sure speedy is, but for everyday big work forget about it. that and i just wasn't happy with the torque compared to my air tools.

Mine would be used more monthly than daily, but I want something strong enough to break free rusty suspension bolts and tight trans/engine bolts. Tired of punching large steel objects when bolts break free with hand tools, and the occasional throwing my shoulder out of place while leaning on a breaker bar.

If he only needs an impact then the dewalt will be the cheapest, since he won't need a compressor. I do agree with you on the torque. Its hard to beat a good impact with 450 ft/lbs of torque. I have a heavy duty electric impact that only has 275 ft/lbs of torque and it is 3 times the size of a standard air impact.

BTW, have you noticed how some have more driving force vs. removal force? I just saw one the other day that had like 275 ft/lbs driving force but only had like 225 ft/lbs in reverse.

that cordless ought to be able to handle it, but for you then, just get a quality corded impact, less cost and, i can't stress this enough, quality will yield close torque numbers to air, unless you're dead set on having an air compressor, which hey, i like my air tools and wouldn't blame you. dewalts corded is a tank from my expierience, and the makitas i've seen hold up well.

edit: ironman types a lot faster than i do lol. and the dewalt corded at work were large but kept up with my little go to decent enough for my purposes on the pickup.

nope haven't noticed that, but did notice so loss with actually having the tool in hand, in reverse just didn't feel quite as strong, i just thought it was a low battery (makita 12v mini impact), being that it was first thing in the morning unbolting forms. may have to look around and see if i can find that.

People keep saying that being a perfectionist is a waste of time; did I listen to them? No.. And it just paid off... Again.
Turns out that I am the top student in one of my classes (I have only missed 2 points), so they just offered me a position in supervised college teaching at Colorado State University.
