Yeah, got to use it or ya lose it. I generally forget most of the math stuff I learn; except for the math stuff in physics 'cus I really liked that class.

Well the stupid thing took me all of 4.5 hours and it was one of the worst experiences of my life, but I feel like I did a good job on it. Just as along as I pass it I don't care.

i was studying to be an engineer, and everything i learned for math except for physics and statistics was pretty much useless in the long run, i knew i had gone too far when i could make dividing by zero ok. anymore the computer design programs that are available make math beyond simple algebra useless, hell the mine design software would crap out how many tons of material would be excavated after inputing some survey data. the me software (solidworks 2010) would kick out exact part weight and the volume of material in the part on the fly, rendering calculus entirely useless, and after giving it time to think, it would do a better stress-strain and load compute than i could do on paper in an hour. sure its nice to know this stuff, but in this world were engineers just push buttons, why bother?

For an engineer I would totally agree with you; engineers have better things to be doing than math. That being said, someone has to be doing it otherwise this world doesn't run.

Edit: Whoever said dividing by zero wasn't OK? I have no problem with it; if no one (Newton, Leibniz, Fermat, Decarte) divided by zero we wouldn't have calculus. If someone actually wants me to explain that I will.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T. seriously just got over the trauma of learning that, and working on reprogramming my brain to go grocery shopping without trying to do a dynamic analysis of what my cart is going through.

and agreed someone has to do it, those people are theoretical physicists and upper level math teachers, not the pencil jockey drawing out the next furby to see if its satanic (no offense evil) little mouth will chomp a toddler's little finger off.

There's a very large rat living in my kitchen. This is not good.

Rodent of unusual size?

And some higher level math is still useful, all the dynamics related stuff for example is important to mechanical engineering. There is just a lot of stuff from math you will never need to know unless you plan on teaching math.

Teach it to chase away stray cats (and mice) and it could be your new best friend!

My opinion thus far is that higher level math is useful...to a point. I took calc in 3d Freshman year and went VERY into detail and tbh it really sucked. Then I took Physics II (E&M) last semester and used very little of 3D calc in it. Im pretty sure 3D calc was actually invented for Physics II not the other way around.

For the most part the upper level math that isn't utilized in physics or engineering courses is absolutely useless(to me). And as said before, with programs like solidworks, ANSYS and matlab knowing how to do things by hand is important but these can ultimately do a better job. Goes back to my old saying "theres no fun in fundamentals" but they are, admittedly, important.

I've decided to live trap the rat since it's only offense was coming in out of the cold to feast on the garbage I let pile up.

Let the mocking for my softheartedness begin.

I'm glad you added in the "to me" part. The higher level stuff is useful to someone, heck solidworks, ansys, and matlab wouldn't work if someone didn't use it. Its kinda hard to see the higher level stuff in action but it is all around. Even stuff as abstract and Algebraic Geometry.

I hate my gun addiction.... I re-finished my mosin-nagant, now I want another one. I was thinking about scoping one and putting a synthetic stock on it. All of this is interfering with buying some crampons. GAH!!!

Do that and I will hurt you.

Bought 3 mosins last week. An 1897 Tula M91 that went through several upgrade transitions, used in the russo-jap war, captured in WW1 by the austrians due to the AZF stamp, some how captured by the hungarians due to the R stamp on the barrel shank, and then sold to finns where the stock was spliced, 150 meter notch ground into the rear sight, taller front post, mis-matched parts, filled in austrian sling hole, and finn sling wire hangers. Friday I picked up a 1943 tula hex 91/30, and what is odd about that one is Tula stopped producing hex receiver 91/30's in 1936, and 1943 is the year they were captured. That would make that rifle a re-barrel but it is still a not so common mosin, and shoots good to boot. Then saturday, I bought a pretty good looking New England Westinghouse M91 with the US military property mark, so it was one of the rifles bought by the govt. at 25 dollars a piece when Remington and New England Westinghouse told the Russians to take a hike after the bolshevik revolution, and we'll keep the money also. It was more than likely used in the polar bear expedition of 1918 when we sent troops to Archangel, Russia, armed with the Remington and Westinghouse M91's to try and stop communism. Most Americans don't realize we fought the russians on their own soil, with their own rifles they bought that were made for them, but the Russians never forgot! The westinghouse is pretty much shot out but I'm working on getting some of the bore back through electronic cleaning.
