Some tournaments you can't have any thing of a certain color (such as orange) because that is the color reserved for the refs. The Spyder Cup is one tournament that I know of where orange is not allowed.

Some tournaments also don't allow pink, they'll reserve it for paint. However, such rules are usually a bit lax.

The NPPL's 'protected color' is orange, I believe. Last time I checked...

NPPL as well as XPSL, orange equipment/apparel is not allowed

NPPL 2007 Rulebook
10. Prohibited Equipment
10.01 Protected Color. Players’ equipment (including uniforms as provided in Section
5) may not contain orange, which is reserved as “Protected Color” for paint.

Not allowing certain colors makes it easier for the refs to tell if a player has been shot out or not. Otherwise they can stand there and debate if it's just his uniform/gear or he can totally miss the fact a player has infact been shot. In the case of the NPPL and NXL orange is the protected color. Some local tournies have protected colors as well and it would depend on the field and the type of paint they decide to use that day.
Also, clear hoppers are not allowed in tournaments either. It's very hard to tell if a player has been shot in the hopper or if a ball simply broke in the loader. So that's two things to take into account, no orange and no clear hoppers.

in local tournaments I am sure orange is fine. I mean I know people that play in local tournaments all the time that have orange shockers and such, but in the national tournaments, I am 100% sure that most do not allow orange. It is a ref color.

Some tournaments dont allow stickers, others dont allow certain color stickers, some dont allow clear loaders, some dont allow certain color equipment. Just check with the tournament rules ahead of time. You will be fine.

Stickers, like markers, vary from tournament series to tournament series. To eliminate "wiping" problems the NPPL and PSP have rules in place as to the size/placement of stickers on hoppers (as well as color...no orange). Lower level tournament series have ad hoc rules regarding this.

I played a tourney where all the refs were like trained straight from the NPPL rulebook: they didn't know how to put the rules into context. They made me rip off one of my 5 PBR stickers (which I only have 1 of now ) and there were 2 guys running around with orange shockers and they didn't say anything to them about orange. If you do have an orange gun, you can always tape it up for a tourney w/ blue painter's tape which won't let the adhesive stick to the marker.

"orange, which is reserved as “Protected Color” for paint."

This is the reason. But it cannot prevent the individual' idea from owning a orange gun.
