Computer virus, need help ASAP

So I'm sitting here listening to music and surfing on here and on a music website, and this blank window pops up with a "C:" blinking at me, and it said something about some thing installing on DOS mode. I closed that, in which i found 3 pop up shortcuts to be on my desktop. Now there is this icon of a little computer in the bottom right hand corner that I haven't seen before, and it says "Web Offer Installation: 83%"......I don't know how to get rid of it, it won't let me!! What should I do? Keep in mind I'm no computer nerd, I don't know much, but is there any basic things I can do to stop this?

Edit: Alright now the thing disspeared, and it said I had a new program installed called "Top Text LookUp". I sent it to the Recycling Bin, but I dunno, it'll prolly still start running again even if I got rid of it from the recycling bin. What should I do?

Go into Control Panel then into Add/Remove programs and look for any programs that don't seem familiar to you.

You don't have a virus; you have spyware, which is arguably just as bad.

For preventative measures, stop using Internet Explorer, and get Firefox. That'll eliminate 97+% of spyware from ever even making it onto your hard-drive, but you still should run Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot periodically.
