If paintball sounds interesting, you need to know some basics about the paintball equipment used to play the game. The main piece of paintball equipment is the paintball itself. While paintballs come in many different shapes and colors, the standard size is .68" in diameter. You'll use the paintballs to "tag" other players when they're shot out of your paintball gun. Other paintball equipment you should be familiar with are arm bands (used to show teams) and flags, whose capture is the ultimate goal of a paintball game.

Tools of the Paintball Trade: Markers/Paintball Guns

Paint guns or markers come in a variety of shapes and styles. With a pump gun, each time a player wants to shoot a paintball, the player must first must cock the paint gun by using a pump and then squeeze the trigger. With a semi-automatic paint gun, the player first must cock the paint gun in order to shoot a paintball, but subsequent shots can be fired by simply pressing the trigger. With a fully-automatic paintball gun, the mechanism is cocked once and paintballs are shot until the trigger is released.

Paintball's superb safety record compared with other sports is largely due to the attention paid to safety concerns since the beginnings of the game. Goggles are required to protect the eyes of all players to during a paintball game. Barrel plugs are also standard issue in all non-shooting areas of a paintball game. Chronographs measure paintball velocity, ensuring that the paintball game is played safely. The standard speed limit for paintballs internationally is 300 feet per second (fps).
