Bottom Line
Expansion Chamber
Dovetail

everything else is up to you but i'd say those 3 are a must
Strengths: Light, consistent, farely fast stock, really needs double swing trigger
Weaknesses: Stock barrel is crap, and stop cocking mechanism is old design that i hate.
Review: Um this is a generally good gun, bought a double swing trigger, and literally cut off my trigger guard, and with the trigger job it hits up to 10-12 bps, not bad for an old mech., this gun has served me well and never had any serious problem, the dovetail is a tricky job unless you buy the kit, but it's worth the money
Conclusion: Generally good gun from begginner to tournament amateur level players, it has reaffirmed to me that it's not the gun, but the player, i've bested plenty of angels and shockers, and even smoked my friend whos plays tournament pro with a DM4 (granted i was playing with a 20inch sniper barrel that shoots spiral balls) i love that barrel

Review: I have used this gun many many many times and it has only broke once. I enjoy using it because it is very small and easy to handle as well as fix. I dont think any of these guns are sold anymore but they are very reliable and buying a used one means it still probably works or can easily be fixed. the reason i recommend only those upgrades is because as a rookie i dont expect someone to go all out in upgrading this gun.
Conclusion: Good gun for rookies

The barrel, maybe the trigger
Strengths: Very reliable, easy to dissasemble, accurate, has not chopped a single ball yet
Weaknesses: Trigger is nothing to phone home about, nor is the barrel
Review: I accquired my gun from a friend of mine about a month ago. The person he got it from sabatoged it before sale, so I had to fix it before use, but due to the simplexity of the gun, I was able to fix it in no time. The barrel and trigger are nothing to phone home about, but I am impressed with how the gun handles. The gun is also pretty accurate, though it is hindered somewhat by the stock barrel, but only for far distances that would require replacing the barrel anyway.
Conclusion: This is a great gun for beginners, not only is it easy to maintain, but it's accurate, fires nicely and is easy to find on eBay.

Review: This is a great gun for begginers because it is easy to maintain gets the job done.
I have one and it is great it can keep up with tippmans and more expensive sypders. It is a great woodsball gun because it is small and light and you will be the faster man.
Conclusion: in Conclusion this is a great gun for begginers but not for advance player who wants speed and acurracy.

Strengths: its light, fast, easy to maintain. some guy complained about it being too light i didnt nottce it but i had a vertical adapter and had an 88 cu nitro tank, so it evened out fine. shoots pretty straight at about 50 feet, no balls broke at all. i got about 8 balls/sec pretty good for only 80 dollars
Weaknesses: nothing it worked fine for me
Conclusion: this is the gun to get as a backup or just something to play around with in the woods. its light compact(it bears the name)and easy. you cant go wrong with this gun.

Weaknesses: Cheaply made
Review: Well since all guns have just as good of accuracy & will shoot the same distance. The only thing to take in consideration would be how constant it is, upgrades, looks, & performance.

The consistency isn't nothing to go wild over its like + or - 20 when you are using c02 and with Nitrogen its + or - 15, this is why you would need a regulator so it can help regulate the amount of air going in, this will help you with much better consistency.

This gun does and will chop paintballs, every gun will this is why you would buy an Agitated Hopper or a Force feed hopper, this will make sure a ball will be down in the chamber every time you shoot.

You can buy a new barrel which will help make the shots more consistent and the porting will make it more quiet when shot.

Face it all mechanical Spyders are the same, you are just paying for milling. So why not spend less money on this gun and get the same performance?
Conclusion: Its an average blowback, nothing more nothing less.

Review: I bought this marker in 1998 for $135. I bought my kid's Spyder Sonix in 2008. I'd bet his marker won't be in nearly as good working order (if it would work at all) as my Compact. Which I think says alot for its durability. They don't make 'em like they used to.

Even in '98 $135 for a Spyder was inexpensive compared to my buddies who were spending $500+ on Auto Cockers & Mini Mags. Now if you can find them used you can get them for about $90 or less. Which is a better value than any Spyder Sonix or Victor.

It is a lot lighter than any Tippmann & is easy to repair and maintain. The stock barrel is absolutley lousy & its rate of fire is slow. I upgraded my barrel & bolt, so it has great accuracy & distance. I could get a better trigger & spring set, but I feel that I should hit my target with a few well placed balls rather then spray a wall of paint.
Conclusion: I feel this is a great woodsball marker due to the fact there are numerous upgrades for Spyders. Any of its weaknesses can be overcome with the right upgrade. Except for the Diagonal feed neck. Barrel & bolt for accuracy & distance. A double trigger & spring set for speed. My nephew who has been playing now for 8 years was so impressed with my set up, he now plays with the same one.

Review: I've had the compact since it came out some 12 years ago, never really had a problem with it until now that i can't find parts to fix simple problems anymore. It's an extremely durable gun, very simple to maintain because it's the most basic mechanical gun that i know of (though it takes a lot of time to take apart but it has very few internal parts so it's real easy to get to know your marker from that), and will shoot even if completely full of muck. Mine hardly ever chopped, but it did ocassionally because of the barrel (stock barrel diameter is almost .70)

The bolt is aluminium, the one ball detent it has is rubber. You have to keep everything properly lubricated and clean everything out after each use for the marker to work at its peak, and if you do it should last you a really long time.

It is not a fast shooter, with a hopper you'd be lucky to get 4 balls a second because of the 1 finger trigger, but since speed is not an issue for me i don't mind as much. It is very loud though, i've never heard a louder marker in my life, so don't use for sniping because one shot will let everybody in a 200m radius know exactly where you are.

The stock 8 inch barrel is not very accurate, but give it one with a few more inches and it's as accurate as any other marker.

The feed is diagonal over the top, which blocks all view so the stock low rail is pointless, but the stock high rail is nice.

I'd recommend this gun to any newbie because it's so sturdy and reliable, but sadly i won't because if anything breaks it's very hard to find spares.
Conclusion: Cheap, reliable, sturdy, simple to use and maintain. But! As mighty as it once was, it's no longer a smart choice to buy, even if used, because if anything breaks the replacement parts (if you can find them) are expensive. But if you're just looking for a loaner or a marker to wreck in your next scenario play, then by all means, this is a great marker.

Still, 8/10 because of all the good memories.

Review: I picked this Spyder Compact off of ebay for about 30 bucks shipped. It was money well spent because It's an easy gun to take care of, easy gun to shoot, and easy on the wallet. Many newer Spyders sell for much more on ebay, but this is the one that basically started it all, it will accept most upgrades out for newer spyders, and can be had for really cheap. Mine has been a good reliable 2nd or 3rd gun for when people new to the sport need a marker, I can loan it to them. Money well spent to get more people into paintball. This gun might break paint with a stock barrel, but I'm using even a stock Spyder Rodeo barrel on it now and it works just fine.
Conclusion: I would recommend this product simply for it's price, for less that the price of a case of beer you could have a marker similar to this. You'd get hours of entertainment out of this, whereas only a headache from the beer (but also perhaps a fun night preceding the headache). I'd say an 8.75, which rounds up to a 9 in my book.

Review: I got this gun about six months ago during the summer (of 2005) for like $50. I know that sounds like alot for an old and used gun, but I saw some potential in it. When I shot this gun I kinda liked the way it felt for some reason and just decided toi buy it and kind of spruce it up a little bit. Eventually I plan to get some upgrades for it and do a custom paint job with Japanese symbols.

When I use this gun it has an extremely noticeable weight imbalance with a CO2 tank on it, so it definitely needs a drop forward to kinda even it out a little bit or maybe a coiled remote or something. Also, it seems like the gun isn't all that gas efficient and its extremely loud. So you might want to get an expansion chamber and low pressure chamber for it.

On the good side, you can take this gun through absolute hell and it'll still shoot. The barrel on it is also pretty good with large bore paint. I played front with it on my Icon and shot out 3 people with it. Oh yeh, and like the name implies, the gun is compact.
Conclusion: If you want some gun just to work on and upgrade, you might as well get this if you can still find one around. Its kinda cool to have because there aren't many of them left in circulation anymore and its becoming increasingly rare. Also, the 10" barrel is just awesome looking on an Icon.
