I wanted a slotted bolt for my TX Storm & i didn't feel comfortable dremeling the stock bolt. So i shopped around and Alamo City has the cheapest aftermarket bolt (found an Evil bolt for less than $10 nib but the reviews for that say it's terrible).
First of all, Alamo City products need to be listed under "new" not "old" since they're clearly still in business (ordered & received my bolt in May 2008, coincidentally the same month of this review!). Now onto the product.
Initial Impressions: Alamo City bolt is shorter than stock so it doesn't stick out the back when installed like the stock bolt does, which makes it odd that Alamo City offers color options for the bolt when no one will ever really see it. Still, it's cool that you have a choice.
AC bolt has the option of o-rings or no o-rings - if you choose none, your bolt will come smooth & grooveless. I chose o-rings, because i think they provide a good seal for efficiency's sake. Because AC mills detent slots in their bolt, they've only milled spaces for 2 o-rings instead of 3 like the stock bolt. But they're in good spots - in front & behind the bolt's inlet hole (where air is directed into the bolt an out to the ball).
I did notice, however, that the bolt is a tiny bit thinner in girth than the stock bolt so i'm wondering if i'll still have some efficiency issues despite choosing to have o-rings. If i'm lucky, maybe this new bolt will swell a tiny bit.
AC bolt seems like it's a more dense delrin than the stock bolt because it feels a little on the heavy side. But i think the fact that it's shorter cancels it out, making it close enough in weight to the stock bolt. Haven't put them on a scale but maybe i should.
Transfered over the bolt pin, applied a little bit of oil to the o-rings, slid the bolt in the gun & gassed up for some testing. No leaks, which is good - means the inlet hole lines up properly. Dry-fired for a bit and everything is good so far. No noticable difference over stock yet, other than this bolt will be easier on my detents.
I'll edit this once i've put some paint through my gun. I know i had some chopping problems before but i'm almost positive it was due to my halo pushing past the stock detents. So we'll see how stiff detents plus this new bolt handles things. |

As a cheap bolt alternative, it's a good choice. But wait for a final recommendation when i do the paint test. |
