Strengths: Extremely durable, easy to work on, simple design, got a great deal on it, looks great with a J&J ceramic barrel and the CAR-15 stock, GREAT cyclic rate (I have outshot a 9v revolution many times), and THE BEST customer support.
And all the newbies always freak out when you pull it out. It gets the looks, and since they only made 800 - pretty rare birds.
Weaknesses: The stock armson barrel broke everything I shot from All-Star to BE. I now use a 12" J&J ceramic and am THRILLED with it. Using Marbs, it outshoots barrels that cost 2x as much.
This nickle finish is great until you go into the woods - then it stands out a little - but for indoor play you are good to go.
The design of the gun makes it a bit long.
Conclusion: I wouldn't trade it for anything! No maintence, cost effective, competes with Cockers and mags. I rec'd a 98 to anyone who wants to play, novice on up.
The only gun I like more is my Glock!

Strengths: I've had my 98 f/x for about a year now. I love the balance on the gun (you must be a two-handed shooter for this, you can't JohnWooPistolFire with this gun). I tend to use the stock bolt with it rather than the hyperstar because the gas efficiency is better with the stock bolt. Other big pluses - its *short* for a tippman, I can fire confidently without having a couple feet of gun stick out. I have a Revy hopper on mine, and smart parts wood grips (require some cutting to fit around the trigger guard). My two friends both have 'cockers and I can shoot with both of them no problem - and I do a *lot* less repair to my gun - its like any 98, you can drag it through the mud and it *still* smokes. I'm getting an RT trigger on it.
Weaknesses: Armson barrel is paint picky, breaks a *lot* of paint. Get another one - I like the All American, but its matter of choice.
the screws in the 98f/x are stock black screwes. looks funny in the nickel finish.
Conclusion: Great gun, works well, allows for a bit of upgrades if you enjoy that kind of thing. Proteam doesn't seem to make it anymore, though, so these days I guess I'd go for a 98 Custom.

Strengths: If you get this gun for a good price ) it would be impossible to build it yourself for anything near that. It has a nice look and feel to it. Most of the serious players I know really pushed the Tippmann over the Spyder, so I figured why not get th f/x since the price was right...
Weaknesses: So far, my only complaint is that it is breaking some balls. It came with an 8" Armson Stealth, which is breaking about... 1 in 50? 60? balls. I am shooting All-Star or 32 Degrees Comp. I think this will get worked out through polishing the barrel and finding the best paint/barrel combo.
Conclusion: The gun is a good deal it you would have done the mods to a 98 anyway. You should consider that you might need to buy another barrel - I read a lot about the Armson barrels before I bought the gun, and people love them or hate them. Sure enough, mine is picky, but accurate when it shoots.
By the way, make sure and get a 9v loader. Otherwise, you will chop balls.Thegun gets an 8 b/c of the barrel and VEY SLIGHT (I am very nit-picky) imperfections in the fit and finish. All in all, I wouldn't have paid the retail, but for $260 you can't beat it.

Strengths: The accuracy and feel of the 98f/x is very nice. The nickel finish is brilliant but not too overpowering. The Armson barrel that comes with it is so silent and SUPER accurate. It is so accurate it will even shoot Brass Eagle paint in tight groups. This marker fires as fast as you can pull the trigger, until the gravity fed balls can't catch up with the bolt. I have wicked visions of purchasing a warp feed for it and doing some serious room clearing! I also have an Armson Occluded Eye Gunsight(OEG) on it, and it is the only way to aim due to the power feed blocking the front sight blade unless you fire SWAG shots. What's SWAG? Scientific Wild Ass Guess.
Weaknesses: Not too much, but the balance is front heavy so one handed shooting is out the door. The fact that the front blade is blocked requires that you get an Armson OEG. The trigger guard is placed in an awkward place so it tends to cut into your fingers a little.
Conclusion: Overall this gun has been a great buy, it doesn't really need any other upgrades than possibly a different barrel for other types of tactical games. It shoots farther than most paintball guns, almost as far as a flatline but far more accurate. However, that is a function mostly of the barrel, not of internal components. Taken all together, if you bought a stock 98 and then tried to upgrade it to include the hyperstar bolt, expansion chamber, Armson stealth barrel, power feed, rear velocity adjuster, double trigger, and the anodizing, it would cost far more than buying it direct from Pro-Team.

Bottomline- If you want a proven paintball marker that you can beat the crap out of, is functional, and allows you to snipe your opponents outside of their markers range, get out your checkbooks and charge cards and call Pro-Team. Holy Shiznit! I sound like I work for them, maybe they'll send me some free stuff for all the marketing plugs...
