The Ranger is one of the best Nelson guns for the money. 150 bucks gets you a competetive gun on Par qualitiy-wise with Phantoms, and the luxury of Autococker threaded barrels and bottomline accessories.
There isn't much to say about the Ranger that hasn't been said about other Nelson valved guns - It's efficient as hell, it's somewhat loud, it's accurate and that backbottle mount is a royal pain unless you have a raised sight mount or a bottomline.
This gun was built to be an Auto-Trigger beast for tournament play back in the day, and so it has a RF that feeds into a vertical port in the gun so as to supposedly increase feed rates. This blocks some of the sight picture, but over the barrel pump handles do this anyways so no big deal. There is a raised sight rail to compensate. Another oldschool tournament design feature was the rounded bolt face (hey, just like you see on some newer electros) that is supposed to decrease chopping at high rates of fire.
Accuracy out of the stock barrel is excellent. I've always had a soft spot for the old WGP barrels. They were annodized black on the outside, and were bare aluminum on the inside so that you could hone and polish them yourself. Adding aftermarket barrels is a simple plug and play operation - just make sure they have a ridge on the back for the pump to ride on. The original barrel is 1" OD. Fortunately, many cocker barrels have this ridge.
The Ranger will always be louder than a Phantom, but comparable to a Buzzard. In fact, you can put a Buzzard pump handle on your Ranger if you can find one. The Phantom has the TPC diffuser in its bolt, which makes for a quieter shot report. Adding a ported barrel to my Ranger did not help noise much.

| Conclusion: |
It's a damn good gun. I highly recommend it over other similarly priced Nelsons. |
