More expensive and bulkier than A-5 Flatline, shoots well only with quality paint
Back when I bought this barrel, it was still being offered by UMS as a custom order only. I had to supply my own A-5 Flatline and 98 Flatline, plus about $120 for parts and labor. I shipped the barrels to UMS, and about two months later I recieved my barrel.
During the ordering proces, I decided to add two 6" rails to the side and one full-length rail on the bottom, plus a special hole pattern that I designed. I included a diagram of the hole placement along with the barrels that I shipped to UMS. The finished product matched the diagram exactly.
Attaching this barrel is exactly the same as attaching a standard A-5 Flatline barrel. In fact, the only difference dimensions-wise between the two barrels is overall length.
While I couldn't do any side-by-side comparisons between my old Flatline and the new one, I could definitely see a noticeable increase in accuracy. Everyone who has tried shooting my A-5 has agreed that the accuracy is incredible, especially for a Flatline. While I probably wouldn't argue with someone that says a high-priced straight barrel could outperform it, the bottom lline is with this barrel you can hit what you aim at. UMS also claims that range is increased. I couldn't validate that, but I wouldn't doubt that the increased range is a factor in the improved accuracy. I used Black Ops paint for all of my testing and play-time with this barrel.
The only trouble I had with this barrel was when I first took it out to shoot it. My shots were hitting far lower on the target than they used to with my A-5 Flatline. This turned out to be a problem with my velocity; it was at around 300 fps. Setting the velocity down to 280 fps, the paint went where it was supposed to, and the accuracy increased as well. Generally, it is reccommended to set your marker to around 280 fps if yor using a Flatline anyway; this one is no exception to that rule.
Currently, ordering this barrel from UMS is a much easier process. You no longer have to supply your own barrels, and overall, the cost is about half of what I paid. Check with UMS for the availability of custom requests, such as specific hole patterns on the shroud.
A huge improvement over the A-5 Flatline. While not for every A-5 owner, for those who want increased range over straight barrels and don't mind the extra size and weight, this is the barrel to get.
Distance, distance, distance and incredible accuracy
Price and may no longer be available
Before I had my A-5, I owned a 98 Custom with Flatline, early on I could see the accuracy and distance but the 98 lacked the rapid cyclone feed system and high rate of fire.
Now that I have the A-5 I needed a barrel that can perform as well as the 98 in distance and accuracy. The APEX, and the A-5 Flatline, just didn't do the job.
When I found this option and had to try it.
The first time out I played woodsball and scenario, and in every game, I was taking people out at 50+ yards from the start of the game. The distance and 22+ BPS made this gun something that kept all opponents on the run, while allowing teammates to advance.
Throughout that day, I only broke 6 balls in the barrel. To that I say its the paint, and the slightly cool weather, simply because the 98 performed the same way during cool weather unless I was using winter fill.
All in all, this combo is the perfect barrel system.
