This is simply the largest and finest collection of paintball games in the world…period.
Smith and Young, the creators behind the Paintballer’s Almanac, took paintball to a new level and re-envisioned how games should be played. For two years they gathered more than 200 games and variants - and created this book as a standardized resource for future generations of paintball players.
This book explains in full detail the rules of all 200 games, beautifully laid-out in a simple-to-read format. |

| Review: |
This book has a very clean and simple layout. All games are sorted alphabetically, so you can find what you're looking for fairly quickly. Each page has the name of the game, a short caption to give you an idea of what it's like, required equipment, followed by how the game is set up and the rules of the game. Often you'll find "variants" which are slight deviations from the game above. They are useful if you find the game taking too long, if you want a more intense experience, or make the game more elaborate. Some games have images to help you understand how the game should be set up.
Inside you will find games that are quick and intense, ones that focus on strategy, and even games similar to ones you have already played. A couple of the games I've seen are a little "weird" in the sense that it is a far stretch from what you are used to playing. I find that this book is excellent for those of you who play out in the woods with a fairly sized group (5-15) because a lot of these games need a referee, and rarely more than one. If you are a referee at a Paintball field who is looking to introduce variety into the games played by the locals, you will be disappointed. A lot of these games require considerable preparation/explanation and are more suited for the "game with the guys this weekend" as opposed to a quick mix-up at the field to keep things interesting.
In terms of equipment, the authors kept those who have small budgets in mind. Props needed to play are kept to a minimum, and most games use similar props. You'll often find a game that seems interesting, but require something like a Water balloon launcher, shields or glow sticks which you'll have to acquire. Although most games are designed to be played with semi-automatic markers, there are MANY games that are played with pump-action and even sling-shots! You'll even find games that have players participating WITHOUT paintball markers, although everyone still requires a mask. I was impressed with the variety and the "thinking outside the box" mentality coming from the authors. |

| Conclusion: |
If you have a decent group of friends who like to play games in the woods occasionally, this book will definitely keep things fresh, especially for those who don't mind moving away from the Elimination/Capture the Flag sort of games. You'll find a handful of games you really like, and you'll probably stick with those. A bunch of you will be flipping through this thinking "Why didn't we think of that?!" because there are a lot of games which are simple enough to understand but really make for an interesting experience.
I'm rating this book a 9 because it will definitely keep things interesting and fresh. A well designed product with a simple and clean layout, with images and tips to help keep things running smoothly. I dropped 1 point because most of these games require a lot of preparation, such as acquiring certain props, explanation to lackeys, and having enough of them who are willing to try something new. |
