I was shopping for an upgrade to my stacked tube design markers that was a mil sim design. I was surprised to find the JT Tac-5M as low as $60 new, and after comparing to others like the Alpha Black, Tippman Custom 98, and BT 4 I was even more impressed with it. Since I already had a large collection of spyder threaded barrels the Tac-5M won out.
For about what a bare bones marker from the others would cost I was able to outfit the Tac-5M with a nice electronic IR sensing hopper and the adjustable stock. My first experience with it was a little rocky, as it broke every ball I fired right where the breach and barrel met. After cleaning it out a few times I found the culprit, a small piece of foam stuck in between the body halves in the breach area. A few seconds with an xacto knife solved the problem and it has not given me a problem since. The only other out of the box issue was the plastic cocking pin, but the adjustable stock comes with a brass replacement, so that solved that problem. Otherwise a 1/8 x 3/4 inch tension pin makes a good replacement when the ends are squeezed slightly.d
Having previously bought the Tac-5 for my son I expected to be the same marker. However most of the parts are completely different! The body looks similar, but is all new. The valve and valve sleeve are similar, but again completely different and the Tac-5M version seems more robust. They do accept the same accessories though.
With the top and bottom rails being stack Weaver and 3/8 you can mount accessories from other manufacturers as well. Tippmann uses a 3/8 rail on top, and they will fit the Tac-5M and Tac-5 nicely. The top rails are almost 8 inches (200mm) long. It comes with two feed ports, one for vertical feed, one thats reversable for right or left hand 45 degree feed. I use mine 45 left with the stock handle in place. The stock handle makes a decent rear sight when combined with either of my M16 barrels.
Accuracy is as good as I had hoped for. Being able to sight along the top makes a difference as I work to get a hit on the 1st or 2nd ball instead of spray & pray. I aim and anticipate where my opponent will appear, and when they do I can accurately get in a few rounds.
This is a mechanical only marker, with no electric eye or trigger options. I can chrono it at 8 PBS consistently, but your mileage may vary. The trigger is heavy with a little longer travel than needed. However, with the provided foregrip and the accessory stock I'm not holding the marker with my trigger hand, so its easier to use two fingers on the trigger.
Another feature that makes it attractive for woodsball is that it is essentially a closed bolt! This is a feature you won't see on anything but higher end markers, and all of them are far more complex to clean and maintain. Being an inline (not stacked tube) power tube is a plus for wear, maintenance, and ruggedness.
The gun looks great and gets a lot of good comments, even from my die hard woodsball buddies and their $$$$ markers. It has made a huge improvement in my game as I can now hold my own with these guys, especially at long range with the Apex barrel. With my old markers even with the Apex I was usually out gunned in any kind of sustained firefight. I use the same config for indoor "scenario" with the PCI M16 or the stock JT barrel and again find the ability to sight along the top and the consistent delivery to be great assets, keeping me in the game against much more expensive markers and more experienced players.
As for JT USA they have live support with American's on the phone, and fast responses to emails. |

If you're not a Speedball / Xball player and are looking for a versatile weapon consider the JT Tac-5M a contender. Spyder barrel compatibility is a plus for a lot of us, along with a superior design and reliability to match its mil sim looks. I'm giving it a 9 because even though it had teething problems JT support was excellent. |

Even though this gun has its weaknesses I still think it can hold its agianst better guns. So far I havent had problems with ball chopping or anything like that. The tac 5 has a good rate of fire if you can overcome the long trigger pull, and I think that though its accruacy isn't dead on its good enough for me to shot though a hole the size gatorade cap and hit someone on the other side. |
